His numerous job titles include that of a singer, songwriter, producer, and actor. Derek Rhodes is far beyond his years when it comes to talent yet he's only 14 years old.
Signed to Missy Elliot's Goldmine Records in 2006, Rhodes has quickly made a name for himself both on Broadway, appearing in "Big Boys Don't Cry," and in the music industry. He has completed background vocals for chart topping artists such as Bow Wow ("Shortie Like Mine"), Mario ("How Do I Breathe"), Johnta Austin ("Turn It Up"), and Ciara ("I Found Myself"). You can almost be certain to find him on tour with the likes of T.I., Jamie Foxx, Ciara, Omarion, John Legend, and Trey Songz.
Though many artists might dismiss Rhodes' as competition because of his young age, a second listen to his incredible voice could change their minds. The above mentioned Trey Songz has done just that. In a recent issue of Flaunt Magazine, Songz had this response after beings asked, "Who are some of your competitors in the music industry today?"
"I'm not a competitive person. Everyone that I've met in the music industry is supportive of what you do. But, I must admit, I'm kind of scared with this new artist, Derek Rhodes, coming out. He's so young and he has a big voice. I love his music. But, yeah, he's keeping me on my toes."
Should other artists be scared? Simply put, the answer is 'yes.'
